  • What’s Your Skin Type? Knowing It Can Save You a Fortune

    If you’re like most of my clients, your bathroom cabinets are piled high with lotions and creams that you’ll never use again. You may have seen a convincing ad or heard a friend with glowing skin rave about the ultimate anti-ageing solution, and you were convinced you were buying the secret recipe of eternal youth.

    The problem is, there are no “one-size-fits-all” cosmetic solutions, and even the most promising products turn out to be a waste of money if they aren’t a good match for your skin. To make sure you spend your hard-earned money on products that will actually provide the expected results, it’s absolutely essential to find out the type of skin you have.

    So What’s Your Type?

    Although everyone’s skin looks normal to them, there are several distinct skin type categories:

    Dry Skin
    Dry skin creates a dull complexion that may look rough or flaky; on the plus side, pores are barely visible. People in this skin type category may notice red areas a lack  of elasticity, making them more prone to lines and wrinkles.

    Oily Skin
    If your face appears shiny just an hour or two after cleansing, you probably have oily skin. You may also notice large pores and blackheads and develop pimples easily. While these issues can be annoying, oily skin is more resistant to wrinkles.


    Combination Skin
    Combination skin can be tricky to diagnose, because some parts of your face feel oily, while others match the profile for dry skin. Often, people with combination skin have an oily T-zone, which includes the forehead, nose, and chin. In some cases, using the wrong products can actually cause combination skin. For example, using too rich a moisturizer can cause your T-zone to appear especially oily and may cause breakouts.

    Sensitive Skin
    Sensitive skin is especially prone to inflammation, and you may experience redness, irritation, or even rashes when you use the wrong ingredients.

    Problematic Skin
    If you have a skin condition such as eczema or persistent acne, chances are you have problematic skin. This can be the trickiest skin type to deal with, as you must use products that help treat your particular issue — or at least don’t make it worse.

    Finding Products that Work

    The first and most important step is choosing products that match your skin type. People with oily skin should avoid highly-emollient lotions (although yes, you still need to moisturize). On the other hand, if you have dry skin, more emollient products are probably just what you need. Those with sensitive skin should avoid harsh ingredients, as well as some fragrances. And if you have combination skin, you may even need to use different products on different parts of your face.

    Second, stick with the try-before-you-buy rule as much as possible. Department stores, dermatologists, and skin clinics generally provide free trial-sized versions of their products and are happy to give them to you upon request. If they believe in their product, they actually want you to try it out, because they know you’ll love it and come back for more.

    The shoulder is a very unique part of the human anatomy. Like the knee, another common area of injury in athletes, the shoulder takes on a large portion of stress during a workout with little support. In weightlifting, this is especially true as the most popular lifts focus on the shoulders, arms, and chest. Overtime, these workouts can lead to serious pain and injury if you don’t take the necessary precautions during your workout. If you consistently find yourself having shoulder pain while working out, you’re not alone. Following are the 5 mistakes you are making in the gym that is causing you shoulder pain and what you can do to prevent it.

    Back Pain

    You Don’t Warm Up

    One of the simplest ways to prevent shoulder pain is often one of the most overlooked. For some reason, people don’t seem to warm up for weightlifting as much as they would for other activities like sports even though weightlifting can be much more physically demanding. If you are going to be doing heavy lifting with your shoulders, the muscles, ligaments, and tendons need to be properly warmed up and stretched to avoid injury. Not sure what to do? There are plenty of simple shoulder exercises that will get your body warm and ready for a workout.

    Your Form is Wrong

    Ask any personal trainer and they will tell you the biggest problem new weightlifters face is poor form. Simply jumping into a weightlifting regimen without a proper understanding of form is a recipe for injury, especially in the fragile shoulder joint. If you notice pain develop after shoulder workouts, take a closer look at your form and speak with a personal trainer at your gym to check it for you. Taking the time to lift with the right form will make the difference between a great workout and chronic shoulder pain, and it can also help improve your overall performance, as well.

    Your Workouts Lack Balance

    The muscles of our body are designed to accomplish two tasks: pushing and pulling. In weightlifting, people tend to place more focus on pushing weights away from their bodies, which is done in the most popular exercises like bench and shoulder presses. When you don’t put equal emphasis on building your muscles both through pushing and pulling, imbalances can occur in your muscle development that can lead to injury. This is especially true for shoulders as muscle imbalances around the shoulder girdle is one of the leading causes of injuries in the weight room. During your workout routine, make sure to include equal lifts that involve pushing and pulling to ensure balance is achieved in your shoulder muscles.

    You Over train Through Pain

    The popular saying “pain is just weakness leaving the body” has been used for years to help athletes and weightlifters push through pain to reach the next level. But often times weightlifters confuse normal wear of the body after working out with the early signs of a serious injury. What happens next is they keep lifting through this pain until one day a serious injury occurs. Although it can be difficult to know the difference between the two,  by understanding the symptoms of serious shoulder injuries you can be better prepared to prevent injury. If shoulder pain arises, take a break and allow your body to recover before lifting again.

    You Only Focus on Glamour Muscles

    For most people, lifting weights is all about building muscles that make you look great by the pool or at the beach. Because of this, many people focus solely on training the specific muscles that show the most results. The problem with this approach is that it creates muscle imbalances that can lead to injury. The shoulder is made up of a series of muscles, and if you only focus on building glamour muscles like your deltoids, you could be forgetting about the smaller supporting muscles that stabilize the shoulder and prevent injury. Making sure all muscles receive the attention they deserve will help prevent injury while still helping you look great next summer.

    Although there is no cure-all solution to preventing shoulder pain in the gym, avoiding the aforementioned mistakes will greatly reduce your probability of getting injury. The best piece of advice you can take to the gym is to listen to your body. Over training is one of the leading reasons weightlifters get shoulder pain, so make sure to take a break when pain begins to arise. After all, it is better to take a day off to prevent injury than to be sidelined for months with a nagging shoulder injury.

  • Are There Any Generic Dermal Fillers?

    Fillers are amazing for treating deep wrinkles, but they can also seem pricey. Because many common brand-name drugs are available in generic form (the generic form of Tylenol is acetaminophen, for example), patients often wonder if the same principle applies to dermal fillers. That is, can you save money with generic Juvederm, Restylane or Sculptra?

    The answer is that, while some dermatologists claim to offer generic fillers, you’re better off sticking with the real deal. Generic fillers may cost less in the short term, but will wind up much costlier in the long term if anything goes wrong. And with customized payment plans available, there’s simply no reason to settle.

    The True Cost of Off-Label Drugs

    In the words of the Physicians Coalition for Injectable Safety, “if you are offered a “generic” or “cheaper” solution to any U.S. FDA-approved dermal filler, you should refuse.“

    There’s a good reason for that: for one thing, the generic version simply may not work as well. It may not fill in wrinkles as fully as expected, and even if it does, results may not last as long. In these cases, you’ll soon be back at your aesthetician’s office for another round of treatments — so you’ll end up spending more money than if you’d just stuck to the reputable brand in the first place.

    Even more worrisome, cheaper versions of brand-name injectables are often counterfeit and may not be safe. Branded dermal fillers come with an excellent safety record; non-branded fillers have not been well tested, so it’s unclear what may happen. Risks could include non-uniform results or more serious medical concerns.

    These guidelines not only apply to no-name versions of branded dermal fillers, but also to products imported from Europe or other overseas nations. These goods may be held to different standards or approved for different uses than those sold in your home continent, or they may even be fakes. And whatever you do, do not buy dermal fillers over the Internet and attempt to use them at home. You could seriously jeopardize both your appearance and your health.

    It may cost less than you think to get quality, brand-name injectables. Fillers may last for up to a year or longer, making the monthly cost relatively low. Different fillers also come with different price tags, so your dermatologist can go over the most affordable options for you.

Peels are less expensive than dermal fillers, but are also not as effective for deep wrinkles and folds.
