If you’ve never had a facial peel, you might have many questions, and possibly a few misconceptions about what they are and what they do. Admittedly, the name itself – “facial peels” – sounds scary enough.
Whenever someone comes to Bradford Skin Clinic and Med Spa, they ask many questions. In this post, we will try to provide all the answers.
Are facial peels like peel-off masks? No, they’re not! Do they cause the skin to flake and peel off? It depends on the strength of the product use, but in most cases, you won’t see any visible peeling effect.
Facial peels remove dead skin cells through a process of chemical exfoliation. The product contains acids that loosen the bond between skin cells, dissolving away debris. While typical physical exfoliants such as microdermabrasion and facial scrubs remove the outer layers of dead skin, facial peels have acids that target deeper layers that scrubs can’t reach.
In many cases, light facial peels are actually more gentle than scrubs, and therefore ideal for individuals with sensitive skin who wish to achieve a smooth, fresh complexion.
There are three main types of peels with benefits that vary greatly:
Light peels are the most gentle type of facial peel, and is available in a range of combinations of acids to achieve different results. These peels require no downtime and may be performed at home.
Medium peels use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and are usually recommended as treatment for photodamaged skin and scarring. Although medium strength peels are milder than deep peels, the risk of blistering and scarring does exist, and the skin usually remains red for five to seven days after the treatment. Medium peels should only be performed by a professional esthetician.
Deep peels are the strongest chemical facial peel, and it uses trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol. These peels penetrate the lower reticular dermis (middle skin layer), resulting in second degree skin burns. It is a painful process that requires several weeks of recovery. Only trained professionals should perform these peels.
At Bradford Skin Clinic, we only use the safest medical grade facial peels, performed by trained professional therapists. Check out our medical grade facial peels – and try our new and exciting iS Clinical Fire & Ice Peel.
Facial peels mainly contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) from plant sources.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are the milder ingredient, which includes mandelic, lactic and glycolic acids. This means that AHA facial peels are ideal for sensitive or dry skin types. AHA peels will exfoliate the skin surface to help improve hydration.
AHA facial peels will:
BHA facial peels are usually stronger than AHAs. Beta Hydroxy Acids penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin, cleaning out pore walls. The active ingredients in BHAs include salicylic acid, a powerful ingredient to fight oily and problem skin types. BHA facial peels are non-irritating, but they fight current break-outs and:
Facial peels, with AHAs and BHAs work hard to bring your natural beauty to the forefront. Some of the most obvious benefits of facial peels include:
Clean pores – Peels get rid of skin congestion, such as milia, blackheads and whiteheads. By breaking apart the bacteria in clogged pores, facial peels leave your skin purified.
Breakout prevention – If you suffer from frequent breakouts, peels with BHAs combined with a home skincare regime that contains salicylic acid helps manage oily skin and acne prone skin types.
Even skin tone – Acids in facial peels penetrate the skin better than typical exfoliant.
Primed complexion – Facial peels removes dead skin cells to reveal a fresh complexion, which also makes it easier for the esthetician to perform any extractions or apply finishing products and facial masks.
Smaller pores – Regular AHA or BHA pores will continue to reduce the size of your pores by removing excess bacteria, sebum and dead skin cells that build up inside pores (bad stuff filling them and causing them to expand).
Smoother skin – One of the most important benefits of skin peels is the fact that it results in smoother skin. You can maintain this smoothness with restorative oil or SPF moisturizer.
